“Making Peace is a Marathon” May El-Khalil

In the aftermath of the 2006 July War between the Lebanese group Hezbollah and Israel, the Beirut Marathon Association chose not to cancel the Beirut Marathon, but rather to hold it as a testament to the resilience of the Lebanese people.  Five days before the November 26, 2006 Beirut Marathon, prominent cabinet minister Pierre Gemayel was assassinated in a suburb of Beirut delaying the race until December 3rd.

Race organizer May El-Khalil in her Ted Talk “Making Peace is a Marathon” describes the similarities between running a marathon and peace-making in the Middle East when she says “Peacemaking is not a sprint it’s a marathon.”   22,000 runners participated, in solidarity, running or walking the 5km, 10km and 42km races with “For the Love of Lebanon” as the theme.
